The founder and father of fractals Benoit Mandelbrot has departed at the age of 85 years. His sad death was informed early this Sunday in Massachusetts, Cambridge. He was French American Mathematician who in 1982 published his book on the nature of fractal geometry. Fractals are mostly used in explaining the irregular shape patterns and designs of nature like fern leaves, galaxies, hurricanes or snowflakes. Numerous scientific fields are now using this concept in their research and study. It is commonly used in biology, physics and finance and some more fields of study.
The Nationwide Better Health Columbus Marathon started this morning at 7:30 am, when 15,000 people were ready to give their best at this already classic race.
The starting line was near the intersection of Broad and Third Streets in downtown Columbus and the event was sold out at 5,000 participants. The 2010 Columbus Marathon had a new Corral Start system.
There will be awards for winners from different age groups, for the top three in marathon and half marathon and top three in each age group.
In the 2009 edition, the Columbus Marathon winners were Matt Folk, Perrysburg OH, with a time of 2:20:45 and Rachel Kinsman, Archbold OH with 2:47:44.
The Columbus marathon is also one of the nation’s top chair racing marathons, with many top racers being present. Last year, the champions were Dane Pilon, Fayetteville – hand cyle course record, Carly Waugh, Knoxville, TN - hand cycle and Jeffrey Fisher, Medina, OH – wheelchair.
Columbus Marathon 2010 & Detroit Free Press Marathon
The talk of Columbus, Ohio and Detroit, Michigan is not football. It is the marathons that are going on at both of these places. The 2010 Columbus Marathon is set to run on Sunday October 17. The Detroit Free Press Marathon is also suppose to run on Sunday October 17.
As with any marathon runners train for months before hand. Some professional marathon runners may train for years to be at the top of their stride. There are also professional marathon runners who will travel week after week to claim the prize money at most marathons. The Columbus Marathon 2010 & Detroit Free Press Marathon does not have the biggest prize money by any means.
You can still expect some professional runners at both of these marathons. This is the 33rd running of the Detroit Free Press Marathon and you can bet some of the runners were at the very first one. There is over 15,000 runners participating in the Columbus Marathon which makes it one of the biggest in the area.
