lmontrealgazette-Munich, Germany • When the next-generation A6 launches in Canada at the end of the third quarter next year, it will do so as a radically different vehicle from the current offering. It has significantly more style, better power and fuel economy and it comes with a boatload of advanced technology.
Audi reveals new A6. Audi's new A6 dellivers more than 57mpg: Audi reveals its new A6, designed to be a rival to the BMW 5-series for audi a6 usata. neue audi a6 you can view View the 2011 Audi A6 Sedan highlights or Audi A6 2012. The Audi A6 is an executive car produced by the German automaker AUDI AG at their factory in Neckarsulm, Germany. It is available in both saloon, and Audi a6 Avant all road
First, the look is far more sophisticated. The key design cues are the new wraparound headlights, complete with LED daytime running lights and the LED light bars that make up the tail lights. The thing that links these individual elements is a bold line (the “tornado” line) that adds depth and character to the side profile. Factor in the wide stance (1,874 millimetres) and fast coupe-like roofline and you have an eye-catching automobile.
The interior mirrors the exterior by marrying soft-touch materials with metallic (or real wood) accents and buttery-soft leather. Even the instrumentation is a little different — the thin film transistor liquid crystal display nestled between the two main dials is beautiful in its clarity.
As for size, the new A6 is slightly shorter overall (now 4,915 mm), but it now rides on a longer 2,912-mm wheelbase, which is up 69 mm. This clips the overhangs, giving it a sportier edge. Likewise, the trunk grows to a cavernous 18.7 cubic feet.
As with Audi’s other offerings of late, the A6 takes weight to heart. While the platform is constructed of steel, there is a lot of aluminum to be found throughout. The front shock towers, fenders, doors, hood and deck lid are all made of aluminum, which represents more than 20% of the body. As a result, the new A6 is 15% lighter than the same car constructed exclusively of steel, and this despite the extra equipment and the laminated windshield and front and rear side windows. The combination promises to deliver a ride as refined as the look.
The S Line model amps things up by adding a more purposeful front chin spoiler, rear valance and monster P255/35 tires mounted on attractive 20-inch rims.
The new A6 will be offered with one engine initially — Audi’s trick 3.0-litre TFSI supercharged V6.In this application, it delivers 300 horsepower and, more importantly, 325 pound feet of torque at 2,900 rpm. The net result, according to Audi, is a run to 100 kilometres an hour that takes just 5.5 seconds. Remarkably, it achieves this while returning a European average fuel economy of 8.2 litres per 100 km. This makes the new A6 0.4 seconds faster while consuming 1.8 L/100 km less fuel.
The power is relayed to the road through Audi’s slick-shifting seven-speed S tronic (twin-clutch) and quattro all-wheel-drive system. The latter employs a crown-gear centre differential, which sends 40% of the power to the front wheels and 60% to the rear. It can, however, send as much as 70% to the front wheels and up to 85% to the rear. It also uses torque vectoring to counter understeer.
In 2012, the A6 will be offered with the same hybrid system as the one featured in the Q5. It combines a 2.0L turbocharged engine with an electric motor, an eight-speed automatic transmission and a 1.3-kW/h battery. As a result, the system boasts a net system output of 245 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque when both power sources are giving their all. In a twist, the Hybrid will only drive its front wheels — a decision taken to maximize fuel efficiency. Audi says the A6 Hybrid will achieve a European average of 6.2 L/100 km.
Badges aside, there is little to differentiate the A6 Hybrid from the regular model. The tachometer makes way for a dial that indicates how much power the electric motor is drawing or regenerating. Lift the deck lid and there is a slight hump at the back of the trunk floor where the main battery is housed — this is the only concession.
As I say, there is a boatload of technology. The optional LED headlights are tied into the navigation system so, as the driver nears an intersection, for example, the light pattern is automatically altered so it casts the most effective beam. The A6’s adaptive cruise control takes things one step farther for Audi. Using two radars (mounted where the fog lights once resided), the ultrasonic sensors from the park assist system and a camera, the cruise control, once set, works all the way from top speed to rest. If the car ahead slows from 120 km/h and comes to a stop, the A6 does likewise. It then tracks the car at a driver- adjustable distance until the A6 reaches its preset speed.
Need more technology? No problem. There is a night vision camera, which highlights pedestrians beyond the range of the headlights and an active lane assist system to go along with a blind spot monitoring system. Finally, the multi-media interface (MMI), which controls everything from the Audi Drive Select system (it allows the driver to tailor the driving characteristics to suit) to the optional Bang and Olufsen sound system is a little different — it incorporates a touch pad that allows the driver to write the letters or numbers of an address or phone number by simply scribing them on the pad. It is a cinch to use and something that’s destined to catch on quickly. It also speaks to the cool quotient that defines the 2012 A6.
